Alex Bittner is Ikerbasque Prof and leads the Self-Assembly group, since 15 years, at CIC nanoGUNE in San Sebastián in the Spanish Basque Country. He works at the interface between physics, chemistry, and biology. His main research area is the electrospinning of proteins and other biomolecules, to produce ultrathin fibres. Recent developments include technological applications such as porous biodegradable layers, strong fibres, and tool development for electrospinning and melt electrowriting. He also works on thin layers of water on biosurfaces, e.g. of viruses.
After a diploma in Chemistry at Technische Universität Darmstadt, and an MSc degree at the University of East Anglia, he obtained a PhD (Freie Universität Berlin) with the department of G. Ertl at the Fritz-Haber MPI. He was postdoc at ETH Lausanne, and worked ten years in the MPI for Solid State Research in Stuttgart.
